Smart Thermostat Essential

The ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential is a programmable Wi-Fi thermostat designed for homeowners who want automated climate control and energy savings. It works with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for voice and app control. The colour touchscreen allows direct temperature changes at the wall. It fits gas, oil, electric, forced-air and heat-pump systems.

Energy-saving operation

The thermostat automatically adjusts to your schedule to save energy when you are away and optimise comfort when you are home. Ecobee states it can save up to 23% on heating and cooling costs compared to a constant hold at 72 degrees F or 22 degrees C. You can track energy consumption remotely through the ecobee app. Wi-Fi 6 connectivity at 2.4 GHz keeps the link reliable.

Upgrade considerations

This model replaces older non-programmable or non-connected thermostats that lack smart scheduling and remote access. The jump is worth it if you want voice control, app monitoring and automatic energy-saving routines. A C wire is required for power; if your current wiring lacks one, a separate Power Extender Kit is needed. High-voltage 110/220V, millivolt and 0-10VDC systems are not compatible.

Questions about this item

How much power does the Smart Thermostat Essential draw when its Wi-Fi 6 radio and colour touchscreen are active all day?

The unit is powered from the HVAC system’s low-voltage control wires; no separate power supply or battery is required for continuous operation.

What wiring must already be in place for the thermostat to work without buying the separate Power Extender Kit?

A C-wire (common wire) is needed for direct power; if your current thermostat lacks one, the optional Power Extender Kit (sold separately) adds the required connection.

Will the Essential control a heat-pump system that uses two stages of heating and one stage of cooling?

Yes — the thermostat supports heat-pump configurations up to 2H/1C as well as conventional forced-air systems up to 2H/1C or 1H/2C.
