Wires, voltage and the C-wire question

Check the wiring before anything else. Most smart thermostats run on 24 V low-voltage systems and use labeled terminals such as R, W, Y and G. Many also need a C wire, which supplies continuous power; without one, the thermostat may need a power-extender kit. Baseboard electric heaters usually run on line voltage, 120 or 240 V, and need a thermostat built for it, since a low-voltage model can be damaged. Heat pumps need extra terminals for the reversing valve. Photograph your existing wiring before you remove it.

Trim plates, bezels and voice support are model-specific

Many listings here are covers, trim plates and bezels rather than thermostats. They are shaped and colored for a particular generation, so read the model number and the color name before choosing. Voice support also varies: some thermostats work with Alexa, others with Google Assistant or HomeKit, and a few offer infrared control for air conditioners. A weather station or display listed here shows temperature and humidity but does not control heating.

Questions about Wi-Fi Smart Thermostats and Trim Plates

Do I need a C wire for a smart thermostat?
Many models do, because the display and Wi-Fi radio need continuous power. If your wall has no C wire, check whether the maker offers a power-extender kit or adapter, or run a new wire from the furnace.
Will a smart thermostat work with a baseboard heater?
Only a thermostat rated for line voltage, usually 120 or 240 V, is safe. Low-voltage smart thermostats are made for furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps and can be damaged by line voltage.
Does a smart thermostat work with a heat pump?
Look for heat pump support in the listing, including the O/B terminal for the reversing valve and the auxiliary or emergency heat setting. Your system's manual shows which wires you have.
