Connect Laptop to SATA Drives

This adapter connects a 2.5 or 3.5 inch SATA SSD or HDD to a USB port on a laptop or desktop. It enables quick access for adding storage, performing backups, creating disk images, recovering data or transferring files. The package includes the necessary power adapter for 3.5 inch drives.

UASP Accelerates Transfers

The single specification that determines suitability is UASP support on both the adapter and the host computer. With UASP enabled on Windows 8, Mac OS X 10.8 or above, or Linux, the adapter delivers up to 70 percent faster read speeds and 40 percent faster write speeds over standard USB 3.0 at peak performance. Without host UASP support, speeds remain at conventional USB 3.0 levels.

Handles SATA III Drives Comfortably

The adapter comfortably utilises the full potential of a SATA III SSD or HDD when UASP is active, making it practical for large backups, disk imaging and bulk file transfers. It runs out of headroom on hosts that lack UASP support, where transfer rates fall back to baseline USB 3.0 throughput and the drive cannot reach its native performance ceiling.

Questions about this item

How fast is the 5 Gbps USB 3.0 link when UASP is active?

With UASP enabled on Windows 8, Mac OS X 10.8 or later, or Linux, the adapter reaches up to 70 percent faster read speed and 40 percent faster write speed than standard USB 3.0, letting a SATA III drive run nearer its native ceiling.

Which USB standard does the adapter use and what throughput does it cap at?

It uses USB 3.0, rated at 5 Gbps, and supports the UASP protocol to reduce overhead and improve sustained transfer rates on compatible hosts.

What drive sizes can I mount and how are they powered?

The cable fits both 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch SATA drives; a separate power adapter is included to supply the 3.5 inch units that need external power.
