Portable storage for Mac users

The GoHardDrive HD250U3 is an 80GB portable hard drive pre-formatted for Mac OS. It connects via USB 3.0 and draws power directly from the host port. The slim 2.5 inch form factor fits easily in a laptop bag for on-the-go backups or file transfers.

Deciding specification: 80GB capacity

With only 80GB of space, this drive suits light document storage or a small media library. It will not hold large game libraries, video projects or full system images. Buyers who need more storage should choose a higher-capacity model.

Thermals, noise and power

The 5400 RPM mechanism runs on USB bus power, so no external adapter is required. In normal use the aluminium chassis dissipates heat quietly without a fan. Power draw stays within standard USB 3.0 limits.

Questions about this item

How fast will file transfers actually run on this 80GB 5400 RPM drive over USB 3.0?

The USB 3.0 link is rated at 5.0 Gbps, but the 5400 RPM mechanical drive inside limits sustained throughput well below that ceiling.

Does the USB 3.0 interface work with older USB 2.0 ports and what speed do I get?

Yes, it is backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports; transfers will then run at USB 2.0 speeds instead of the 5.0 Gbps maximum.

Will this 2.5 inch slim drive fit in a standard laptop bay or does it need a caddy?

It is a 2.5 inch slim form factor designed for portable use; it connects externally by cable and does not mount inside a laptop bay.
