Ready for business use

The HP EliteBook 840 G3 is a 14.0 inch laptop powered by an Intel Core i5-6300U dual-core processor running at 2.4 GHz with 3 MB L3 cache. It includes 8 GB of DDR4 memory and a 256 GB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD. The non-touch display offers a 1366 x 768 resolution with LED backlighting. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 uses shared system memory. Windows 10 Home comes pre-installed.

Ports and connectivity included

The chassis provides two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 3.1 Type C port for modern peripherals. Video output is handled by a full-size DisplayPort and a VGA connector. Wired networking uses a Gigabit RJ-45 jack while wireless supports 802.11 b/g/n or better. A built-in webcam and a SIM card reader are also present. The package supplies the laptop, a charger and the battery.

Straightforward setup for office deployment

Windows 10 Home x64 is already installed so the machine boots to a usable desktop after the initial out-of-box experience. Driver support for the Skylake platform is mature and widely available through Windows Update. The 1366 x 768 panel limits on-screen workspace for multi-window tasks. Buyers who want more storage or a higher resolution screen should consider other models. The non-touch display and integrated graphics are not suited for intensive creative workloads.

Questions about this item

Will the 8GB DDR3 memory need to be upgraded for heavier multitasking later?

The 8GB DDR3 is soldered and cannot be expanded, so plan workloads around that fixed capacity.

What thermal limit appears first when the Core i5-6300U runs at 2.4 GHz for long periods?

The dual-core Skylake chip throttles once its package hits the factory thermal ceiling, reducing clocks until temperatures drop.

How loud does the fan get and how hot does the chassis feel during an all-day workload?

The single fan spins up noticeably under sustained load, and the bottom case becomes warm to the touch after several hours.
