Business laptop with QHD display

The HP EliteBook 840 G4 is a 14.0-inch business laptop equipped with an Intel Core i7-7500U dual-core processor running at 2.7 GHz. It includes 16 GB DDR4 memory and a 512 GB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD. The non-touch screen delivers a 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution with LED backlighting. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed for professional environments.

Fanless integrated graphics thermal profile

Intel HD Graphics 620 uses shared system memory and operates within the processor's 15 W power envelope. The integrated design eliminates a discrete GPU fan, reducing acoustic output during typical office workloads. Heat is managed through the chassis and a single CPU cooling assembly. Power draw remains modest for everyday productivity tasks.

Sustained load throttling behaviour

Under prolonged heavy compute the dual-core 15 W chip will hit thermal limits and reduce clock speeds to maintain safe temperatures. The 3 MB L3 cache and shared graphics memory constrain parallel throughput during extended renders or compiles. Buyers needing sustained multi-core performance or dedicated video memory should consider alternative form factors.

Questions about this item

How do I install the NVMe M.2 SSD and which step is often missed?

Insert the drive into the M.2 slot at an angle, press it flat, and secure it with the retention screw; the step most people skip is fastening that screw, which leaves the drive unseated.

Which component will need replacement first under daily use?

The internal battery is the only user-replaceable part that degrades with charge cycles; the 16 GB DDR4 memory and 512 GB NVMe SSD are soldered or not designed for routine swap-outs.

What thermal limit appears first during sustained heavy workloads?

The 15 W CPU package power limit throttles the i7-7500U before the cooling system reaches its maximum, so clock speeds drop to stay within that envelope.
