Business notebook with vPro security

This HP EliteBook 840 G5 is a 14.0 inch business laptop running Windows 10 Pro. It combines an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8650U quad-core processor at 1.9 GHz with 16 GB of DDR4 memory and a 512 GB NVME M.2 SSD. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 drives the FHD 1920 x 1080 non-touch display. Built-in Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 handle connectivity.

Suits mobile professionals needing manageability

The silver aluminium chassis targets users who value Intel vPro remote management, HP Sure Start BIOS protection and HP Sure Recover options. The 14 inch form factor balances screen space with portability for office or travel use. Buyers who require a touchscreen, a larger 15.6 inch panel or discrete graphics for heavy 3D workloads should consider other configurations. The fixed 16 GB memory capacity also limits future RAM expansion.

Quad-core U-series CPU with 8 threads

The Intel Core i7-8650U provides four cores and eight threads with a base frequency of 1.9 GHz and Intel Turbo Boost up to 4.2 GHz. This TDP-constrained processor determines sustained performance for productivity, video conferencing and light creative tasks. Thermal design and power limits are fixed by the ultrabook chassis, so workloads that demand prolonged maximum clock speeds will throttle.

Questions about this item

How do I install additional DDR4 memory in the EliteBook 840 G5 and which slot is commonly missed?

The laptop ships with 16 GB as 8 GB x 2, filling both SODIMM slots; to add more you must remove one existing module, and the lower slot under the keyboard is the one installers often overlook.

Which component will likely need replacement first after heavy daily use?

The 512 GB PCIe M.2 SSD has a finite write endurance, so it is the part most likely to require replacement before the soldered CPU or the DDR4 memory.

What thermal limit appears first when the i7-8650U runs at 4.2 GHz for extended periods?

The processor hits its 15 W TDP ceiling and throttles from 4.2 GHz toward the 1.9 GHz base clock once the cooling solution saturates.
