EliteBook 840 G6 business laptop

The HP EliteBook 840 G6 is a 14.0-inch business notebook powered by an Intel Core i7-8665U quad-core processor running at 1.90 GHz. It ships with 16 GB DDR4 memory and a 256 GB NVMe PCIe M.2 solid-state drive. Windows 11 Pro is pre-installed.

Grade B build with Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI

This unit is graded B for cosmetic condition, meaning the chassis and LCD show visible scratches or surface imperfections. A single USB Type-C port provides Thunderbolt 3 connectivity for docks or displays. One HDMI port, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports and a Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet jack handle legacy peripherals. A 720p webcam is integrated above the screen.

15 W U-series limits sustained loads

The 15 W U-series chip throttles under prolonged heavy workloads such as video rendering or large compiles. Intel UHD Graphics shares system memory and suits office applications, not 3D gaming or GPU compute. The 256 GB NVMe drive fills quickly with modern application suites. Thunderbolt 3 caps at 40 Gbps, so the fastest external NVMe enclosures cannot reach their peak throughput.

Questions about this item

What does the Thunderbolt 3 port cap at in practice?

The Thunderbolt 3 port supports up to 40 Gbps and can drive two 4K displays or one 5K display while also delivering power and data through a single USB-C cable.

What physical space does the M.2 SSD need to fit?

The 256 GB NVMe drive uses a standard M.2 2280 slot; the laptop chassis provides one such slot accessible after removing the bottom cover.

How is the NVMe drive installed, and what step do people miss?

Remove the bottom cover screws, insert the M.2 2280 drive at an angle into the keyed slot, press it flat, and secure it with the single retention screw; the step often missed is re-seating the battery connector before closing the case.
