HP Internal CD/DVD Combo Drive IDE 48x/24x/16x

This internal optical drive reads and writes CDs and reads DVDs through an IDE interface. It fits a standard 5.25-inch half-height bay and is finished in carbon black. The unit is supplied new and ready for installation in compatible systems.

Suits legacy builds and optical archiving.

This drive suits users maintaining or repairing older computers that still provide an IDE connector and a 5.25-inch bay. It handles CD-R at 48x, CD-RW at 24x and DVD-ROM at 16x for disc authoring or data retrieval. Builders whose motherboards or chassis support only newer interfaces should look at other options.

IDE interface and half-height 5.25-inch form factor

The single specification that decides fitment is the IDE interface combined with the half-height 5.25-inch form factor. A system must present both an available IDE header and a matching drive bay. Without those two physical and electrical requirements met, the drive cannot be installed or used.

Questions about this item

How often will the laser or drive mechanism need replacement?

The drive has no user-serviceable laser or mechanism; if read or write errors appear the whole unit is replaced.

What speed limit appears first during long DVD reads?

Maximum DVD read speed is 16x, so sustained transfers cap at that rate.

How much heat or noise does the drive produce when running all day?

The 5.25" half-height IDE drive runs silently with minimal heat during continuous operation.
