Format and capacity: CD, DVD and Blu-ray tiers

Each disc family has fixed capacities. CD-R holds 700 MB, or 80 minutes of audio. DVD-R and DVD+R hold 4.7 GB, enough for about two hours of standard-definition video, and dual-layer DVD+R holds 8.5 GB. Blu-ray BD-R holds 25 GB per layer, with 50 GB dual-layer and 100 GB BDXL discs available. Dual-layer and BDXL discs need a writer that lists support for them; a plain single-layer writer cannot record them.

The minus and plus versions of DVD, DVD-R and DVD+R, are rival standards. Current writers handle both, but some older standalone players read one type more reliably than the other, so a disc meant for an old player is worth testing first. Audio CDs for car stereos and old hi-fi players are most reliable on CD-R, while rewritable CD-RW discs often fail to play in them.

Speed rating, printable tops and pack size

The maximum speed on the label, from 4X or 6X on Blu-ray to 48X or 52X on CD-R, is what the disc is rated for. The writer burns at the highest speed both it and the disc support, and burning at a moderate speed often gives cleaner results than the top one. Printable tops come as inkjet, white inkjet, hub-printable and thermal types, and each needs a matching printer. Spindles of 25, 50 or 100 suit batches, while small packs in cases suit one-off copies.

Questions about Blank CD, DVD and Blu-ray Discs: Formats Compared

What is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?
They are two competing recordable formats with the same 4.7 GB capacity. Current writers handle both, and most players read both, but some older standalone players are fussier about one. If compatibility matters, test a single disc first.
Why does a 4.7 GB disc show less space on my computer?
Disc makers count a gigabyte as one billion bytes, while Windows shows binary units, so 4.7 GB appears as about 4.4 GB. Small file-system overhead takes a little more, so the usable space is a touch lower still.
Can any DVD writer burn dual-layer discs?
No. The writer must list dual-layer (DL) support. DL discs hold 8.5 GB instead of 4.7 GB, and a drive without that feature cannot record them. The same applies to Blu-ray dual-layer discs and BDXL.
