The HPE J9733A is a 2-port stacking module designed for the HPE 2920 Switch Series. It enables up to four switch units to operate as a single logical stack. Network administrators managing campus or branch LANs use it to simplify configuration and reduce uplink consumption. It installs directly into the switch chassis without external cabling.

Stack Capacity and Physical Limits

The module provides two dedicated stacking ports, supporting a maximum stack of four 2920 switches. This ceiling suits small to medium deployments where unified management outweighs the need for larger fabrics. Each unit measures 2.69 x 8.07 x 1.13 inches and weighs .33 lb, fitting the standard module slot. The four-switch limit is fixed; larger stacks require a different platform.

Upgrade Path and Fit

This module replaces standalone switch operation with a stacked topology, removing the need for inter-switch trunk links and separate IP addresses. The jump is worthwhile when port density grows beyond a single chassis or when a single control plane reduces operational overhead. It is not for environments requiring more than four units in a stack or switches outside the 2920 series.
