What this module adds

This plug-in expansion module provides eight SFP+ ports that accept 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps transceivers. It is designed for network teams extending an HPE Aruba 5406R chassis with additional high-density fibre or direct-attach links. The module installs in a vacant slot and is managed through the existing switch operating system.

SFP+ port limits

Each of the eight ports supports either 1 Gbps or 10 Gigabit Ethernet speeds, but not intermediate rates such as 2.5 Gbps or 5 Gbps. Total chassis bandwidth and the supervisor engine determine the practical throughput ceiling, so aggregate traffic may be constrained by the shared backplane rather than the individual 10 Gbps interfaces.

Chassis integration

The module slides into a standard 5406R slot and locks with the captive screws, requiring no separate power supply or cabling beyond the SFP+ transceivers. MACsec encryption is supported in hardware on every port, enabling link-level security without additional licences. Compatibility is limited to the two listed 5406R v3 zl2 base models.
