Product Identity

This is a new IBM 300 GB internal hard drive built for the DS3000 Series Storage System. It uses a 3.5 inch form factor and a SAS interface running at 6Gb/s. The spindle rotates at 15000 rpm for high-throughput workloads.

Deciding Specification

The SAS 6Gb/s interface and 15000 rpm spindle speed determine whether this drive matches the performance tier and controller requirements of the target array. Compatibility is limited to the IBM DS3000 Series Storage System as stated by the manufacturer.

Fit and Alternatives

This module suits administrators expanding or repairing an existing DS3000 enclosure that specifically accepts 3.5 inch SAS drives. Buyers who need a different capacity, a 2.5 inch form factor, or compatibility with other storage platforms should look at other parts.

Questions about this item

What does the 15000 rpm spindle speed mean once the drive is installed in a server?

The 15000 rpm spindle speed gives the drive low latency and high sustained throughput for random I/O workloads such as databases and virtualisation.

What does the 6Gb/s SAS interface cap in practice?

The 6Gb/s SAS interface limits the maximum theoretical transfer rate to six gigabits per second, which the drive cannot exceed regardless of spindle speed.

Will this 3.5" drive fit directly into an IBM DS3000 series storage system?

Yes, the 3.5" form factor matches the drive bays in IBM DS3000 series storage systems for direct installation.
