IBM TravelStar 8 GB PCMCIA PC Card Drive

The IBM TravelStar 34L4223 provides 8 GB of storage on a PCMCIA PC Card form factor with 512 KB cache. It is designed for legacy laptop expansion slots and suits users maintaining or upgrading older portable systems. The drive installs directly into a compatible Type II or Type III slot without external power. It serves technicians and enthusiasts who need period-correct capacity for vintage hardware.

Practical limits of the PCMCIA interface

The PCMCIA PC Card standard caps throughput well below modern bus speeds, so large file transfers will be slow. The 512 KB buffer helps small random accesses but cannot overcome the interface bandwidth ceiling. Hot-swap support depends on the host laptop implementation and is not guaranteed. Systems without a native PC Card slot cannot use this drive without an adapter that may not be available.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 8 GB TravelStar 34L4223 or a smaller capacity PCMCIA card for my laptop?

Choose the 8 GB model when you need maximum storage on a single PC Card; a lower-capacity card only makes sense if your system BIOS cannot address the full 8 GB.

What does the 512 KB cache actually do when the drive is installed in a laptop?

The 512 KB buffer stages read and write bursts, reducing wait states on the PCMCIA bus and giving smoother throughput during file transfers.
