SATA-to-USB 3.0 adapter for 2.5" and 3.5" drives

This adapter connects a SATA SSD or HDD to a USB 3.0 port on a laptop or desktop. It supports both 2.5" and 3.5" form factors for storage expansion, backup, disk imaging or data recovery. The package includes a 12V 2A power adapter required for 3.5" drives.

USB 3.0 bandwidth and UASP performance limits

The interface delivers up to 5Gbps theoretical throughput. When the host also supports UASP, read speeds can be up to 70% faster and write speeds up to 40% faster than standard USB 3.0. UASP is available on Windows 8, Mac OS X 10.8 or above, and Linux.

22-pin SATA connector with DC-Jack power input

The cable uses a 22-pin SATA connector and a DC-Jack port for the included power supply. External power is mandatory for 3.5" SATA HDDs; 2.5" drives may operate from bus power alone.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the version with or without the 12V/2A power adapter?

The adapter includes a 12V/2A power supply, which is required when connecting a 3.5" SATA HDD; a 2.5" drive can often run from the USB port alone.

What does the 5Gbps USB 3.0 rating mean for actual file transfers?

The link runs at up to 5Gbps, and with UASP support on Windows 8, Mac OS X 10.8+, or Linux you can see up to 70% faster reads and 40% faster writes versus standard USB 3.0.

Which SATA standard does the adapter use, and does it limit SSD performance?

It uses a SATA III 22-pin connector, so a SATA III SSD or HDD can reach its native speed; the USB 3.0 link is the practical ceiling.
