What the cable does and who needs it

This Toslink digital optical audio cable carries S/PDIF signals between devices that have standard optical ports. It supports uncompressed PCM and compressed 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 surround formats such as Dolby AC-3 and DTS. The 6 ft length suits typical living-room runs between a TV, sound bar, game console or AV receiver.

Upgrading from basic plastic Toslink leads

The cable replaces thinner plastic-optical leads that can suffer higher attenuation or connector wear. The 24K gold-plated metal connectors and a 2.2/5.0 mm aluminium-alloy jacket with nylon braiding reduce insertion loss and resist corrosion. The step up is worthwhile when the run passes near power cables or when the connection is plugged and unplugged repeatedly.

Limits of the Toslink optical interface

The interface is limited to stereo PCM and lossy 5.1 to 7.1 surround streams; it cannot carry lossless multi-channel formats or high-bitrate audio beyond its bandwidth. Plastic fibre also attenuates over longer distances, so runs well beyond 6 ft may need a repeater or a different transmission method. The 1394 reference in the spec sheet relates to a legacy FireWire link, not to this optical cable.

Questions about this item

Will the 6 ft cable reach from my TV to a sound bar on the same shelf?

The cable is 6 ft long, which typically spans a TV-to-sound-bar gap on the same unit or adjacent furniture; measure your exact distance before buying.

How do I insert the male Toslink plugs without damaging the gold-plated tips?

Remove the protective caps, align the squared-off connector with the port's notch, and push straight in until it clicks — never force it at an angle.

Will the nylon-braided jacket or gold-plated connectors degrade over time?

The braided jacket resists abrasion and the 24K gold plating resists corrosion, so no routine maintenance is needed; replace only if the cable is kinked or a connector is physically broken.
