Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 gaming laptop

This Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 is a 15.6-inch laptop built for gaming and multimedia work. It runs on an Intel Core i7-3630QM processor with 8GB DDR3 RAM and a 500GB solid state drive. Discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT650M graphics drive the 1920x1080 non-touch display. Windows 10 Home 64-bit is pre-installed.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

Buyers wanting a portable machine for older games, media playback and everyday tasks will find the specification practical. The Blu-ray RW drive adds disc writing capability. Users who need a touchscreen, higher graphics performance for modern titles, or more than 8GB of memory should consider other options.

GT650M discrete graphics card

The NVIDIA GeForce GT650M is the component that defines gaming capability on this system. It provides dedicated video memory separate from the 8GB system RAM. This card supports DirectX 11 and handles many older titles at 1080p, but will not run current AAA releases at playable frame rates.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 500GB SSD version or look for a larger capacity?

The 500GB SSD is the only drive fitted; there is no secondary HDD bay, so capacity cannot be expanded internally without replacing the drive.

What does the Core i7-3630QM's 3.4GHz turbo mean for everyday speed?

The quad-core processor reaches 3.4GHz on short bursts, keeping Windows 10 64-bit and creative apps responsive while the 8GB DDR3 handles multitasking.

Does the USB 3.0 port deliver full 5Gbps throughput with external drives?

Yes, the single USB 3.0 port runs at the 5Gbps signalling rate, so compatible SSDs and hard drives operate at their rated transfer speeds.
