Micro desktop for business workloads

The Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q Tiny desktop PC fits a full 65 W hexa-core processor into a micro form factor chassis. An Intel Core i7-8700 running at 3.20 GHz with a 4.60 GHz turbo frequency and 12 MB cache delivers 6 cores and 12 threads for multi-tasking office applications. 32 GB of DDR4 UDIMM memory and a dual-drive layout with a 256 GB M.2 SSD plus a 1 TB hard drive provide responsive boot times and ample local storage. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed and a USB keyboard and mouse are included.

Thermal and power profile

The 65 W processor is cooled inside the compact case without requiring external radiators or oversized fans. In typical office workloads the system maintains stable clock speeds while keeping acoustic output low enough for open-plan environments. Power draw scales with the CPU load, staying within the rated envelope during sustained multi-threaded tasks.

Build integration and expandability

The micro footprint frees desk space and supports VESA mounting behind a display. A USB Wi-Fi and Bluetooth dongle provides wireless connectivity when internal Wi-Fi is not present. The DVD-ROM optical drive handles legacy media, while front and rear USB ports accommodate peripherals. Internal expansion is limited to the existing memory and storage configuration, so buyers needing additional drive bays or PCIe cards should consider a larger chassis.

Questions about this item

How do I install extra memory in the M720q and which slot mistake should I avoid?

Open the Tiny chassis, locate the two DDR4 UDIMM sockets and press each module straight down until the side clips click; the common error is inserting a stick at an angle so only one clip engages.

What components will need replacement first in the M720q?

The mechanical 1 TB hard drive and the DVD-ROM drive have moving parts that wear out before the 256 GB M.2 SSD or the soldered Intel UHD Graphics.

What thermal limit appears first when the i7-8700 runs at 4.6 GHz for a long period?

The 65 W processor hits its turbo power ceiling and the Tiny cooler forces the cores to drop below the 4.6 GHz boost clock to stay within thermal limits.
