ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6 new business laptop

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6 is a new 14.0" Windows 10 Pro laptop built for mobile professionals. It runs on an Intel Core i7-8550U processor up to 4.0 GHz with 8GB LPDDR3 memory and a 500GB NVMe PCIe SSD. The 1920 x 1080 FHD IPS display, fingerprint reader and 4G LTE WWAN support work-anywhere productivity.

Suits frequent travellers.

This ultra-light carbon-fibre chassis passes 12 military-grade tests and 200 quality checks, making it reliable for constant transport. Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C adds 40 Gbps connectivity for docks and peripherals. Buyers who need more than 8GB of soldered memory or a touchscreen should consider other models.

8GB soldered LPDDR3 decides upgrade limits

The 8GB LPDDR3 memory is fixed on the motherboard and cannot be expanded after purchase. If your daily applications regularly exceed this capacity, the laptop will throttle to swap on the 500GB NVMe SSD. Confirm your typical workload fits within 8GB before ordering.

Questions about this item

What are the exact dimensions and weight range of the X1 Carbon 6 so I can check it fits my bag?

The 14.0 inch chassis weighs between 2 and 2.9 lbs and uses a carbon-fibre and magnesium-alloy roll-cage construction.

How do I install a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro on the 500GB NVMe SSD and which step do people miss?

Boot from USB media, select the NVMe drive during setup, and remember to install the Intel RST driver early or the installer will not see the SSD.

Which components inside the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6 will need replacement first and how difficult are they?

The 8GB LPDDR3 memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded; the 500GB NVMe SSD is replaceable via the M.2 slot, and the internal battery is user-serviceable with a screwdriver.
