What this drive is

The Lite-On IHAS124 is a new internal DVD writer that fits a standard 5.25 inch half-height bay and finishes in piano black. It writes DVD±R at 24x, DVD±RW at 8x and dual-layer DVD±R DL at 8x, while CD-R reaches 48x and CD-RW 32x. Read speeds top out at 16x for DVD and 48x for CD.

Who it suits and who it does not

Builders adding optical media support to a desktop with an available 5.25 inch bay will find the drive matches the form factor and speed ratings listed. It does not write Blu-ray media, so users needing higher-capacity optical discs should look at a Blu-ray writer instead. Laptops and small-form-factor cases without a half-height bay cannot accommodate this unit.

The specification that decides fit

The drive requires a 5.25 inch wide by half-height bay measuring 1.6 inches tall, 5.7 inches wide and 6.7 inches deep. Verify your chassis has that exact opening before ordering.

Questions about this item

Does the 24x DVD+R write speed put extra wear on the laser diode?

The drive writes DVD+R at 24x and rewritable media at 8x; normal use at these rated speeds does not exceed the laser’s design limits.

What limits continuous burning at the 24x DVD rate?

Sustained 24x burns are limited by the 16x DVD-ROM read speed and the host system’s ability to feed data fast enough.

How much heat and noise does the 1.98 lb internal unit produce during all-day operation?

The 5.25" half-height drive runs on standard 12 V / 5 V power with no active cooling; it stays quiet and warm only during active reads or writes.
