A 1 metre passive copper cable carrying 100 GbE over QSFP28 connectors
The Mellanox MCP1600-C001E30N is a one-metre passive copper cable built for 100GbE Ethernet links. It uses a QSFP28 connector on each end and a 30AWG conductor. The assembly suits data-centre racks and high-performance compute clusters that need a short, fixed-length interconnect.
Passive copper construction means the cable draws no power and produces no audible noise. Heat generated by the transceivers at each end is dissipated through the connector housing without any active cooling. The 30AWG conductors keep resistive loss low across the one-metre span.
Signal integrity is maintained for continuous 100GbE throughput because the cable is factory-characterised for the full 100Gb/s rate. No active equalisation or retimer is present, so performance depends on the host ports meeting the same electrical specification. The fixed one-metre length prevents excess insertion loss that longer passive reaches would introduce.

Align the QSFP28 connector with the port, insert until the latch clicks, then verify the link LED shows 100GbE; the step often missed is not seating the latch fully, which leaves the link at a lower speed.
The passive copper cable has no active parts to service; inspect the QSFP28 ends and 30AWG jacket periodically for dust or kinks, and replace the cable if the connector latch breaks or the link drops from 100GbE.
The 1 metre length and 30AWG gauge set the reach limit; signal integrity degrades before thermal issues arise, so the cable must stay at or under 1 metre for reliable 100GbE operation.
