Contact Time Limits at Extreme Temperatures

At 1,472°F protection lasts less than 5 to 7 seconds, while 932°F allows 11 to 14 seconds of contact. Lower heat at 662°F extends safe handling to 15 to 17 seconds and 482°F to 20 to 22 seconds. These intervals define the practical window for moving hot grates, coals or cookware.

Upgrade From Basic Oven Mitts

Standard fabric mitts cannot withstand direct flame or radiant heat above 500°F without burning through. These gloves replace them when handling chimney starters, rotisserie spits or heavy cast iron that exceeds conventional mitt ratings. The jump is worth it whenever contact time at 662°F or higher is unavoidable.
