Fuel decides flavour, setup time and where you can cook

Gas grills heat quickly and hold steady temperatures, charcoal gives smoke and a hot sear but takes longer to light and clean, and wood chips add smoke flavour. Electric grills of around 1500 W plug into a standard outlet and suit balconies where open flames are restricted; smokeless indoor models exist. Propane and natural gas are not interchangeable without a conversion kit. Full-size choices are in Gas & Charcoal Grills. Check building rules before using any flame near a wall or balcony.

Where the grill will live: clearance, wind and upkeep

Measure the spot with the lid fully open and side shelves in place, then leave the clearance your manual asks for from walls, railings, eaves and branches; a widely used guideline is about 10 feet from the house. Level, non-flammable ground matters, and wind affects both gas flames and charcoal temperature. Covers, mats, tool sets and model-specific parts such as heat plates, cooking grids and burners are gathered in Grill Covers, Mats & Utensils, so note your grill's model number before you look.

Questions about Grills and Outdoor Cooking

Can I convert a propane grill to natural gas?
Only if the manufacturer offers a conversion kit for that model. Propane and natural gas run at different pressures and need different orifices, so never swap fuels on a grill that is not designed for it.
How far should a grill sit from the house?
Follow the manual first. A widely used safety guideline is at least 10 feet from the house, and well clear of railings, eaves, fences and overhanging branches. Never use a charcoal or gas grill in a garage or enclosed porch, and check building or rental rules.
Can I use an electric grill indoors?
Only models designed for indoor use, such as smokeless tabletop grills. Never use charcoal or gas grills indoors because of carbon monoxide. Use electric grills on a stable surface near a grounded outlet and avoid extension cords with a low rating.
