Practical limits of the Cat6 UTP standard

The 550 MHz rating supports higher bandwidth than 100 MHz wire, but the unshielded design offers less protection against external electromagnetic interference in noisy environments. Maximum certified performance is defined for 100 metre channels, so longer single runs may not achieve the rated 10 Gigabit Ethernet capability. Shielded or fibre alternatives suit harsher conditions.
