Four-bay SATA enclosure with Thunderbolt 3

The OWC ThunderBay 4 is a desktop storage enclosure that holds up to four 2.5 or 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or solid-state drives. It connects to a host computer through a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port and includes dual Thunderbolt 3 ports for daisy-chaining additional peripherals. The unit is RAID-5 ready and ships with the necessary cable.

Suited for multi-drive RAID arrays.

This enclosure targets creative professionals and power users who need high-capacity, redundant storage in a compact desktop form factor. It supports RAID 0, 1, 4, 5 and 1+0 configurations via software or hardware controllers. Buyers who only need a single external drive for transport or simple backup should consider a single-bay enclosure instead.

Dual Thunderbolt 3 ports enable daisy-chaining

The two Thunderbolt 3 ports allow the ThunderBay 4 to sit in the middle of a peripheral chain, passing video and data signals to downstream devices. This topology is essential for workstations with limited port availability. The enclosure requires drives to be purchased separately.

Questions about this item

Will the internal fan or power supply need replacement after extended use?

The enclosure uses a built-in cooling fan and internal power supply; both are serviceable parts, but OWC does not publish a replacement interval.

What limits sustained write performance when all four bays are populated?

The Thunderbolt 3 interface and the SATA drives themselves set the ceiling; real-world throughput will not exceed the slower of the two.

How loud and hot does the unit get when running continuously?

A single temperature-controlled fan keeps drives cool; noise stays at a low office hum and chassis warmth is noticeable but not excessive.
