Desktop Storage for Windows and Mac

The Western Digital My Book 8TB desktop external hard drive connects via USB 3.0 with a Micro-B port. It arrives formatted exFAT for immediate use with Windows 10 or later and macOS 11 or later. The package includes the drive, a SuperSpeed USB-A cable, an AC adapter and a quick install guide.

Upgrade from Smaller Portable Drives

Users running out of space on lower-capacity portable drives or internal storage gain a single 8TB volume with desktop-class reliability. The jump makes sense when backups, media libraries or project archives exceed the limits of bus-powered devices and a stationary, AC-powered unit fits the workflow.

Eight Terabytes for Media Libraries and Full Backups

The 8TB capacity holds large photo, video and music collections alongside complete system images created by the included WD Backup software or Apple Time Machine. Hardware-based 256-bit AES encryption with password protection secures the data. Performance is bounded by the USB 3.0 interface, so sustained transfers of very large datasets will be slower than on faster interfaces.

Questions about this item

What are the exact dimensions of this 8TB My Book drive?

The drive measures 6.73 inches wide, 1.93 inches deep and 5.47 inches high, weighing 2.12 lbs. It requires an AC power outlet and a free USB-A port on the host computer.

Which cable and port do I connect for the initial setup?

Use the supplied SuperSpeed USB-A cable (5Gbps) into the drive's Micro-B port and a USB 3.0 or 2.0 port on the PC or Mac; the drive is pre-formatted exFAT for immediate Windows 10+ or macOS 11+ recognition.

When should I expect to replace the AC adapter or the drive itself?

The 3-year limited warranty covers the entire unit including the AC adapter; after that period plan for a new desktop drive as mechanical wear increases and the adapter may need replacement if it fails.
