Built for field work

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 is a fully rugged 13.1-inch laptop designed for outdoor and industrial use. Its XGA touch display with LED backlight is readable in direct sunlight. An integrated Verizon 4G LTE modem and GPS receiver provide connectivity and navigation without extra dongles. It ships with Windows 10 Pro and a digitizer pen for gloved operation.

Thermals noise and power

The single-core Intel Core i5 running at 2.70GHz draws modest power, allowing passive-heavy cooling that keeps fan noise low in typical office or vehicle-mounted workloads. MIL-STD-810G and IP65 ratings confirm the chassis survives vibration, dust and water jets without thermal throttling. The mechanical 500GB hard drive is the main source of audible noise and heat during sustained writes.

Build integration

Two DDR3 800 modules totalling 8GB occupy both SO-DIMM slots, so memory upgrades require replacing the existing pair. Gigabit LAN and 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi handle wired and wireless networking without additional cards. The included AC adapter powers the system and charges the battery, which the manufacturer rates for up to 18 hours of use. No optical drive bay is present.

Questions about this item

How is the CF-31's 500 GB hard drive installed and what step do people miss?

The 500 GB hard drive sits in a front-accessible bay; the step people miss is seating the drive fully into the connector before tightening the caddy screws so the latch engages.

What maintenance or replacement will the CF-31 need later?

The two DDR3 800 MHz SO-DIMM modules can be upgraded to 8 GB total; the coin-cell CMOS battery on the motherboard will eventually need replacement to keep BIOS settings.

What limit shows up first under sustained use on the CF-31?

The single-core 2.7 GHz i5 processor reaches thermal limits before the MIL-STD-810G chassis does, throttling clock speed during long, heavy workloads.
