Rugged field laptop

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-54 is a 14.0-inch semi-rugged notebook built for mobile professionals who work outdoors or in industrial environments. It ships new with Windows 10 Pro, an Intel Core i5-5300U processor at 2.3 GHz, 16 GB of memory and a 500 GB SSD. The HD display runs at 1366 x 768 and is not a touchscreen; a digitizer pen is included for precise input.

Connectivity and expansion

Integrated 4G LTE with FirstNet support and a GPS receiver keep the system online and located without extra dongles. A smartcard reader and fingerprint reader provide hardware-based authentication for secure logins. Wired networking uses a 10/100/1000 Mbps LAN port while wireless relies on 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.1. Four USB ports handle peripherals and the memory is already at the 16 GB maximum so no RAM upgrades are possible.

Durability and thermals

The chassis meets MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-461F and IP65 ratings for shock, vibration, electromagnetic interference and dust or water ingress. Passive cooling keeps the Intel HD Graphics 5500 and low-power CPU running quietly during typical office or field workloads. The supplied power adapter provides reliable charging for all-day deployments away from mains power.

Questions about this item

Does the Core i5-5300U throttle under continuous load?

The dual-core processor runs at 2.3 GHz with Intel HD Graphics 5500 inside the MIL-STD-810G chassis; sustained performance depends on the passive cooling design of this rugged model.

How loud and hot does the CF-54 get during all-day use?

The sealed IP65 chassis uses fan-assisted cooling; noise and surface temperature rise with workload but stay within the MIL-STD-810G environmental limits for which the unit is certified.

What must I already own to use the built-in 4G LTE and GPS?

An active nano-SIM data plan from a carrier supporting the FirstNet bands used by the integrated modem is required for mobile broadband and assisted GPS functionality.
