Panasonic Toughbook CF-54 14" Rugged Laptop

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-54 is a new 14.0 inch fully rugged laptop built to MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-461F and IP65 standards. It runs Windows 10 Pro on an Intel Core i5-5300U processor at 2.3 GHz with 16GB memory and a 128GB SSD. The HD multi-touch display supports digitiser pen input for field data capture. Integrated 4G LTE, GPS, DVD drive, smartcard and fingerprint readers suit mobile professionals in public safety, utilities and defence.

Who this suits and who it does not

This device suits field workers who need a certified rugged chassis with integrated 4G LTE, GPS, smartcard and fingerprint authentication for secure mobile workflows. Buyers who need more storage capacity than 128GB or a higher resolution panel than 1920 x 1080 should look elsewhere. Users requiring modern wireless standards beyond 802.11a/b/g/n or Bluetooth 4.1 will find the connectivity limiting. The soldered 16GB memory ceiling prevents future RAM upgrades for heavier workloads.

Deciding specification: 128GB SSD

The 128GB solid-state drive is the single specification that decides fit. It determines whether the operating system, applications and local field data can reside on the device without external storage. If your deployment images and offline databases exceed this capacity, the CF-54 will not meet the requirement regardless of its rugged certifications or integrated peripherals.

Questions about this item

How much heat and noise does the Core i5-5300U produce when the CF-54 runs all day?

The 2.3 GHz Core i5-5300U is a low-power dual-core chip with Intel HD Graphics 5500, so sustained workloads generate modest heat and the fan stays quiet in typical office use.

What must I already own to use the built-in 4G LTE Multi FirstNet on this CF-54?

An active nano-SIM and a compatible data plan from a carrier that supports the FirstNet band are required; the laptop includes the modem and GPS receiver.

Will my older 802.11n router limit the wireless speed of this Toughbook CF-54?

The CF-54 supports 802.11a/b/g/n, so it will connect at up to the router's maximum n-rate; Bluetooth 4.1 is also available for peripherals.
