Rugged 14-inch laptop for field work

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-54 is a new semi-rugged notebook built for professionals who operate outdoors or in industrial environments. It runs Windows 10 Pro on an Intel Core i5-5300U processor clocked at 2.3 GHz with 8 GB of memory and a 2 TB SSD. Integrated GPS, a smartcard reader and a fingerprint sensor support mobile security workflows. A digitiser pen is included for direct screen input.

MIL-STD-810G IP65 chassis with Fischer USB

The magnesium-alloy frame meets MIL-STD-810G and MIL-STD-461F shock, vibration and EMI standards plus IP65 dust and water resistance. A sealed Fischer USB port survives repeated mating cycles in dirty conditions. Four standard USB ports, gigabit LAN, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 handle peripheral and network connections. The non-touch HD panel resists glare while the spill-resistant keyboard drains liquid away from components.

Single-core i5-5300U limits heavy compute

The processor is a single-core design with Intel HD Graphics 5500, so multi-threaded workloads such as video encoding or large dataset analysis will run slowly. Memory tops out at 16 GB and the display is fixed at 1366 x 768 resolution. Buyers who need more compute threads, higher resolution or discrete graphics should consider other platforms.

Questions about this item

What is the maximum data rate of the LAN port on this CF-54?

The built-in LAN supports 10/100/1000Mbps, so the practical ceiling is 1000 megabits per second over a wired connection.

What are the physical dimensions and mounting requirements for this 14-inch Toughbook?

The unit is a 14.0-inch laptop weighing about 2 lbs with a .5 inch profile; it requires no special mounting hardware and fits standard laptop bags or vehicle docks designed for the CF-54 chassis.

How is the digitizer pen installed, and what step do users often miss?

The pen is a passive digitizer stylus that works immediately on the 1366 x 768 non-touch display; the common oversight is expecting touch input, but this model only accepts pen input, not finger touch.
