DVD burner for desktop PCs

The Plextor PX-891SAF-R is an internal DVD burner with a SATA interface and a tray loading mechanism. It writes DVD+R and DVD-R media at 24X and reads DVD-ROM at 16X. CD-R writing reaches 48X while CD-ROM reading also runs at 48X. A 512KB buffer helps maintain steady data flow during recording.

Best for legacy media and basic archiving

This drive suits users who need to read or write CDs and DVDs on a Windows 7, Vista or XP system. It also supports DVD-RAM at 12X for random-access storage. Builders without a free SATA port or a 5.25-inch bay cannot install it. Anyone requiring Blu-ray playback, M-DISC support or USB connectivity should look at a different product.

24X maximum DVD write speed

The highest write rate is 24X for both DVD+R and DVD-R single-layer discs. Dual-layer DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL are written at 12X. CD-R tops out at 48X. These speeds determine how quickly a disc can be finalised.

Questions about this item

Does the retail package include everything needed to install and use the drive, or must I buy a SATA cable or software separately?

The retail box contains the PX-891SAF-R drive, a SATA cable, Vinpower burning software and an installation guide, so no extra cable or software purchase is required.

The specs list several DVD write speeds — which one should I use as a guide for everyday single-layer recording?

For standard single-layer discs the drive writes DVD+R and DVD-R at 24X, which is the highest speed listed for those formats.

The headline says 24x DVD burner — what does that actually mean when the drive is in a real PC?

It means the drive can write a full single-layer DVD+R or DVD-R disc at 24X speed, while dual-layer and rewritable formats write at lower speeds such as 12X or 8X.
