What it is

This two-pack of RCA WS3.5mm-MMF adapters splits a single 3.5 mm female jack into two 3.5 mm male plugs. Each cable handles both audio and microphone signals for headsets that use a single four-pole connector. The set includes one black and one silver unit.

Deciding specification

The adapters only work with headsets wired to the CTIA standard used by Android devices; they are not compatible with Apple Earbuds or Beats headsets that follow a different pinout. Verify your headset follows the Android/CTIA layout before purchasing.

Who it suits

Gamers and remote workers who need to connect a CTIA-standard headset to separate microphone and headphone ports on a PC or laptop will find these cables ready to use. Users with Apple or Beats headsets, or anyone needing a single combined port rather than dual plugs, should look at a different adapter.

Questions about this item

What does the 3.5 mm female port on this splitter actually do inside a PC?

It accepts a single CTIA-standard Android headset so both its headphone and microphone signals reach the computer through the two 3.5 mm male plugs.

Which wiring standard does the adapter follow and what limitation does that create?

The splitter follows the CTIA layout used by most Android headsets; Apple Earbuds and Beats headsets use a different CTIA arrangement and will not work correctly.

How much space should I allow for the braided cable and connectors when routing it behind a desktop?

The packaged set measures 14.33 in wide, 12.83 in high and 9.06 in deep, so allow at least that footprint for the two Y-cables and their gold-plated plugs.
