Purpose & audience

The Rode SC4 is a shielded 3.5 mm TRS-to-TRRS adapter that lets microphones with a standard 3.5 mm output plug into TRRS smartphones and tablets. It is aimed at creators who want to record with a RODE VideoMic or similar stereo microphone directly into an iPhone, iPad or compatible Android device using apps such as RODE Rec for iOS.

Thermals noise power

As a passive audio adapter the SC4 draws no power, produces no heat and adds no audible noise to the signal path. Gold-plated contacts maintain a clean connection without active circuitry.

Bundled value

Grey colour-coding on the TRRS plug identifies the smartphone end at a glance. The adapter sums stereo left and right channels to a mono signal so stereo microphones work with TRRS inputs without extra cables or software routing.

Questions about this item

How do I plug the Rode SC4 into my smartphone so the microphone is recognised?

Insert the grey TRRS end fully into the phone's 3.5 mm headset jack; the grey colour marks the TRRS side that carries the combined mono signal.

Will the gold-plated contacts on the Rode SC4 need cleaning or replacement over time?

Gold plating resists oxidation, so the contacts normally stay reliable without cleaning; replace the adapter only if the cable or housing is physically damaged.

What happens to stereo microphone audio when I use the Rode SC4 with my iPhone?

Both left and right channels are merged into a single mono signal to match the TRRS input expected by iOS devices.
