Slim laptop storage

The Seagate ST500LM021 is a 500GB 2.5-inch hard drive built to the 7mm height that ultra-thin notebooks require. It suits owners of slim laptops or ultraportables who need affordable capacity for everyday files and applications without the thickness of a standard 9.5mm drive.

Straightforward SATA fit

The drive uses a standard SATA 6.0Gb/s connector and the 7mm z-height matches the bays in most modern slim systems. Installation is a simple slide-in and screw-down; the only common issue is attempting to fit it into a chassis that only accepts the thicker 9.5mm form factor.

Steady 7200 RPM throughput

At 7200 RPM with a 32MB cache the drive sustains consistent read and write rates during long file transfers or backups. Mechanical latency averages 11ms, so performance remains predictable under continuous load rather than spiking only in short bursts.

Questions about this item

How can I verify the ST500LM021 is running at 7200 RPM after installation?

Use a tool like CrystalDiskInfo or the BIOS to confirm the rotation speed reads 7200 RPM and the SATA link shows 6.0 Gb/s.

What comes in the box and do I need a separate SATA cable or mounting bracket?

The drive ships in retail or OEM packaging; no SATA cable or bracket is included. Use the laptop's existing SATA connector and 7mm drive bay.

Should I choose the 500GB 7mm model or a 9.5mm drive for my ultrabook?

Pick the 7mm ST500LM021 — its 7.00mm height fits ultrabooks and slim laptops, while 9.5mm drives will not fit.
