What this adapter does

The SMUGDESK board converts an M.2 NGFF B Key SSD that uses the SATA protocol into a standard 2.5-inch SATA 3 drive. It lets you install a compact M.2 module into desktops, laptops or drive cages that only offer 2.5-inch SATA bays. The package includes a matched plastic enclosure that shields the circuit board and SSD from dust, impact and static. No driver is required for Windows or Linux systems.

Sustained data behaviour

The adapter is fully compliant with the SATA 3.0 6Gbps bandwidth standard, so read and write speeds remain consistent during long transfers. Because the M.2 SSD itself runs on the SATA protocol, throughput never exceeds the SATA III ceiling. The passive design adds no controller overhead, so performance mirrors the bare drive under continuous workloads.

Thermals, noise and power

The plastic housing acts as a passive heatsink, helping to spread heat from the M.2 SSD during extended use. With no fan or active components, the adapter adds zero audible noise to the system. Power draw is limited to the SSD itself, supplied through the standard SATA power connector, so the assembly does not increase the overall power budget.
