Converts an M.2 2242 slot into two SATA 3.0 ports using a JMB582 chip for 2.5-inch drive expansion
This compact adapter converts a single M.2 2242 B+M Key slot into two independent SATA 3.0 ports for 2.5-inch SSDs, HDDs or optical drives. It is built for mini ITX motherboards, small form factor PCs and DIY NAS units where PCIe slots are scarce. The JMicron JMB582 controller provides a direct PCIe-to-SATA bridge without occupying a full expansion bracket. Installation is internal and hidden, keeping chassis wiring tidy.
The card adds two 6Gbps channels when the motherboard has no free SATA headers or when a PCIe slot cannot be spared. It is worth the jump for builders expanding a NAS array, adding bulk storage to an embedded system or populating a mini PC drive bay. AHCI, NCQ and hot-swap support keep multiple drives responsive under sustained 24-hour workloads such as disk arrays or video recording. The adapter requires a spare M.2 2242 slot wired for PCIe signalling.
Verify the motherboard offers an M.2 2242 B+M Key socket that exposes PCIe lanes; some M.2 sockets carry only SATA or are keyed for 2280 modules. Ensure the operating system — Windows, Linux or FreeNAS — can load the JMB582 driver for full hot-plug and NCQ operation. Confirm the chassis has physical space and power connectors for the additional 2.5-inch drives. No PCIe bracket or external power adapter is included.

The adapter uses the M.2 2242 form factor with B+M Key notch, so it inserts directly into any standard motherboard M.2 slot that accepts 2242-length cards.
Install the JMicron JMB582 driver for your operating system — Windows, Linux or FreeNAS — then the two independent SATA 3.0 channels appear without further configuration.
Replace the SATA cables if you see intermittent drive detection, reduced 6Gbps link speed or physical connector damage during routine NAS maintenance.
