Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter

The StarTech MDP2HDMI is a passive converter cable that connects an HDMI display to a Mini DisplayPort source. It supports PC resolutions up to 1920x1200 and HDTV resolutions up to 1080p with 5.1 surround sound pass-through. The 5.1 in dongle requires no software or drivers for operation. It is compatible with Intel Thunderbolt 1 and 2 ports that carry DisplayPort signals.

Check your port type before ordering

This adapter only works with DP++ (DisplayPort++) ports that can output HDMI and DVI signals natively. Standard DisplayPort-only ports will not pass video through this passive dongle. Verify that your laptop, desktop or docking station specifies DP++ or multi-mode support in its documentation. The male Mini DisplayPort plug fits Thunderbolt 1 and 2 ports directly, but Thunderbolt 3 or 4 ports need a separate USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter first. Audio pass-through depends on the source device supporting HDMI audio over its Mini DisplayPort output.

Build quality and daily use

The black housing is lightweight and compact for travel or permanent desk use. A short 5.1 in cable tail reduces strain on the port while keeping the HDMI female socket accessible. Gold-plated contacts on both connectors resist corrosion and maintain signal integrity. The passive design draws no external power, so there is no wall wart or USB power lead to manage. Plug the Mini DisplayPort end into the host, connect a standard HDMI cable to the female socket, and the display is recognised immediately.

Not for users needing active conversion

Buyers whose source lacks a DP++ port cannot use this passive adapter and must choose an active converter instead. It does not support resolutions above 1920x1200 or refresh rates beyond standard 1080p timing. Users requiring longer reach should pair it with a quality HDMI cable rather than relying on the short dongle alone.

Questions about this item

Does the MDP2HDMI come with an HDMI cable or do I need to buy one separately?

The adapter has a 19-pin HDMI female port, so a separate HDMI cable is required to reach the display.

Should I pick this passive Mini DisplayPort model or an active converter for my setup?

Choose this passive adapter only if the source port is DP++ (DisplayPort++) or Thunderbolt 1 or 2; otherwise an active converter is needed.

What does the 1920x1200 headline resolution mean once the adapter is plugged into my laptop?

It supports PC resolutions up to 1920x1200 and HDTV resolutions up to 1080p, with 5.1 surround sound pass-through when the video source allows it.
