Connect Two Displays from One mDP 1.2 Port

This hub splits a single Mini DisplayPort 1.2 output into two independent DisplayPort connections. It suits professionals who need a dual-monitor workstation from a laptop or compact desktop with limited video outputs. The adapter supports audio pass-through and works with devices such as Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and 3 or AMD Eyefinity graphics cards.

Bandwidth Limits Resolution to 4K at 30 Hz

Multi-Stream Transport over the 1.2 link shares total bandwidth across both outputs. The maximum supported mode is 3840 x 2160 at 30 Hz per display. Lower resolutions including 2560 x 1600, 2560 x 1440 and 1920 x 1200 are also available. Higher refresh rates or 4K at 60 Hz exceed the interface capacity and are not supported.

Requires Host GPU with MST Capability

The hub only functions when the source Mini DisplayPort 1.2 port implements Multi-Stream Transport. Systems whose GPU or firmware lacks MST will mirror rather than extend the desktop. Buyers whose hardware does not expose MST cannot achieve independent displays with this adapter.

Questions about this item

Should I pick a different model if I need three monitors instead of two?

This MST hub provides two DisplayPort outputs from one Mini DisplayPort 1.2 input; adding a third display would require a separate hub or a device with more ports.

What does the 3840x2160 at 30hz spec mean when I plug in two 4K screens?

Each connected monitor can run up to 3840x2160 at 30 Hz; the hub splits the Mini DisplayPort 1.2 bandwidth across both outputs.

Does the Mini DisplayPort 1.2 connection limit the refresh rate on 1440p or 1080p monitors?

The hub supports 2560x1440 and 1920x1080 at their native timings within the Mini DisplayPort 1.2 bandwidth budget.
