Converts USB to RS-485 or RS-422 with optical isolation, auto baud detection up to 128000bps, and 5000m range
The UOTEK UT-820E connects a PC USB port to RS-485 or RS-422 field buses using an RJ-45 or DB9 male connector. It is built for engineers and integrators who need to link legacy industrial equipment, PLCs, or sensors to modern laptops or embedded PCs that lack native serial ports.
The adapter handles asynchronous communication in half-duplex two-wire or full-duplex four-wire modes with automatic direction control. It supports point-to-multipoint networks of up to 128 nodes at baud rates from 300 to 128000 bps. At 9600 bps the RS-485/422 segment reaches 5000 m, while the USB link is limited to 5 m and the highest speeds require shorter cable runs.
The unit provides 1500 W lightning and surge protection plus ±15 kV ESD protection on the serial side, shielding the host computer from industrial transients. Status LEDs for power, TX and RX give immediate visual feedback. The rugged enclosure measures 92×64×25 mm and operates from -40 °C to 85 °C at 5 % to 95 % humidity, making it suitable for cabinet or field mounting.
