The Vszerda SA-054-XY uses a JMB575 controller to turn one SATA host port into five independent SATA 3.0 connections. It targets builders who need more drive bays than their motherboard or add-in card provides and whose host controller supports port multiplier or selector operation.

Port multiplier requirement

The adapter only works when the host SATA port operates in port multiplier or selector mode; without that capability the connected drives will not be recognised. Compatible host chipsets include JMS582, JMB585, ASM1061, ASM1064 and ASM1166, and the device complies with Serial ATA Port Multiplier Spec 1.2 and Port Selector Spec 1.0.

Replacing single-port SATA connections

This multiplier replaces a direct one-to-one SATA cable when the system has a spare port multiplier-capable host connector but insufficient physical ports for five drives. The upgrade is worthwhile when the host controller and firmware both support multiplier operation and the workload can share the single 6Gbps upstream link.
