Thunderbolt 3 cable 0.7 m 40 Gbps 100 W

This Thunderbolt 3 cable connects USB-C devices such as laptops, tablets, docking stations and monitors. It carries data, video and power in a single male-to-male link. The short length suits desk setups where excess cable would be a nuisance.

Practical limits of the Thunderbolt interface

Data moves at up to 40 Gbps, which is eight times the rate of USB 3.0. Video output reaches 5K at 60 Hz on one display or dual 4K at 60 Hz with two cables. Power delivery tops out at 100 W, so the host and peripheral must both support that level for maximum charging speed.

Build quality and daily use

The black 0.7 m jacket is flexible enough for tight routing behind a monitor or dock. Male-to-male Thunderbolt 3 connectors plug directly into USB-C ports without adapters. Backward compatibility with USB 4, USB 3.2, 3.1 and 2.0 means the cable works with older gear, though speed and power fall back to the lowest common standard.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 0.7 m Thunderbolt 3 cable or a longer length for my desk setup?

The 0.7 m length is a short cable designed for close-range connections such as a laptop to a dock on the same desk. If your devices sit farther apart, a longer cable would be more practical.

What does the 40 Gbps rating mean when I plug this cable into my laptop and storage drive?

It allows data transfer up to 40 Gbps between Thunderbolt 3 or 4 devices, so large files move in seconds. Actual speed depends on the capabilities of the connected host and storage.

How does the Thunderbolt 3 interface affect what I can connect and the power it delivers?

The cable carries Thunderbolt 3 signals for video, data and up to 100 W of power delivery. It works with Thunderbolt 3 and 4 docks, monitors and drives, and is backward compatible with USB 4, USB 3.2, 3.1 and 2.0 devices.
