Which cable can actually run at Thunderbolt speed?

Thunderbolt 3 and 4 cables use the USB-C plug, but a plain USB-C charging cable is not a Thunderbolt cable and may be limited to USB speeds. A full-speed Thunderbolt cable runs at 40 Gbit/s and carries DisplayPort video, data and power on one cable. Length is the catch: passive Thunderbolt 3 cables longer than about 0.8 m drop to 20 Gbit/s, while every certified Thunderbolt 4 cable holds 40 Gbit/s, using active electronics in the longer lengths. Look for the lightning-bolt logo, a stated 40 Gbit/s, and the power rating when the cable will also charge a laptop.

Add-in cards and adapters for older or extra ports

Add-in cards give a desktop Thunderbolt ports it lacks, but they depend on the motherboard, which needs a compatible Thunderbolt header and BIOS support, and a free PCIe slot. Older Thunderbolt 2 hardware uses the Mini DisplayPort shape and does not plug directly into a USB-C Thunderbolt 3 port, so it needs a dedicated adapter. Network adapters turn a Thunderbolt port into 10 Gbit Ethernet or fiber. Check the host port generation and the device before choosing.

Questions about Thunderbolt Cables and Add-In Adapters

Can I use a USB-C charging cable with a Thunderbolt device?
It may power the device, but the data link usually drops to USB speeds, and some devices will not work at all. For full Thunderbolt speed, use a cable marked for Thunderbolt 3 or 4 at 40 Gbit/s.
Are Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 cables interchangeable?
They share the USB-C plug, and a Thunderbolt 4 cable works in Thunderbolt 3 ports. A Thunderbolt 3 cable works in Thunderbolt 4 ports too, but the cable length that holds 40 Gbit/s is shorter.
Does a Thunderbolt cable carry video?
Yes. Thunderbolt carries DisplayPort video alongside data and power, so one cable can run a monitor and a dock. The host and display must support it, and 4K or 8K modes depend on the cable and ports.
