Desktop storage for Windows users

The Western Digital Elements 12TB desktop drive connects via USB 3.0 Micro-B and arrives formatted NTFS for Windows 10 and later. It adds high-capacity external storage for photos, music, videos and large files without requiring software installation. The compact black enclosure measures 6.50 by 1.90 by 5.30 inches and weighs 1.92 pounds. An AC adapter and USB cable are included in the box.

Suits Windows PCs; not for plug-and-play Mac

This drive works immediately on Windows computers that provide a USB 3.0 port and can supply enough power through the included adapter. Users of macOS, Linux or older Windows versions must reformat the drive before use. Buyers who need hardware encryption, ruggedised construction or network-attached access should look at other product lines. The desktop form factor also requires a power outlet, so it is not suited for portable use without mains power.

The 12TB capacity decides fit for large media

A single 12TB volume holds extensive photo archives, video projects and game libraries that would overflow smaller drives. The USB 3.0 interface moves those files at up to 5 Gb/s when the host port supports that speed. If your storage need is well below 12TB or you require bus-powered mobility, a smaller portable drive may be more appropriate. The capacity figure is the primary specification that determines whether this model matches the workload.

Questions about this item

How much usable space does the 12 TB capacity provide once the drive is formatted and connected to a PC?

The drive delivers 12 TB of raw storage; after NTFS formatting Windows will show slightly less, but you still gain roughly twelve terabytes for photos, videos and large project files.

What transfer speeds can I expect from the USB 3.0 Micro-B interface in everyday use?

USB 3.0 caps at 5 Gbps, so real-world copy speeds typically reach several hundred megabytes per second depending on the host port and file sizes.

Will the 6.50" x 1.90" x 5.30" enclosure fit on a crowded desk and does it need any mounting hardware?

The compact footprint sits flat without brackets; just allow space for the AC adapter and the Micro-B cable at the rear.
