14 TB desktop external storage

The WD Elements Desktop drive adds 14 TB of extra space to a Windows PC through a USB 3.0 Micro-B connection. It arrives formatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1 and 7 and works immediately without software installation. An AC adapter and USB cable are included in the box. The black desktop enclosure measures 6.50 by 1.90 by 5.30 inches and weighs 1.98 lbs.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This drive suits users who want a simple, high-capacity add-on for backups, media libraries or freeing up an internal disk on a Windows machine. It is not for buyers who need hardware encryption, ruggedised construction, USB-C connectivity, or a portable bus-powered form factor. Mac or Linux users should expect to reformat the drive before use.

Deciding specification — USB 3.0 Micro-B interface

The single specification that decides fit is the USB 3.0 Micro-B interface. It delivers fast data transfers on USB 3.0 ports and remains compatible with USB 2.0 ports at reduced speed. If your workflow demands a different connector or bus-powered operation, this model will not meet that requirement.

Questions about this item

Does my computer need a USB 3.0 port to use the 14TB Elements drive?

The drive works with USB 2.0 ports as well, though transfer rates will be slower than on USB 3.0.

Will the drive work alongside an older USB 2.0 external drive on the same PC?

Yes, both drives can be connected simultaneously; each will operate at the speed of its own USB connection.

How can I confirm the 14TB capacity is recognised after plugging it in?

Open File Explorer on Windows and check that the new drive shows roughly 14TB of available space.
