18 TB desktop external hard drive

The WD Elements desktop drive provides 18 TB of storage in a compact enclosure. It connects through a USB 3.0 Micro-B port and is formatted NTFS for immediate use with Windows 10, Windows 8.1 or Windows 7. An AC adapter and USB cable are included in the package.

USB 3.0 Micro-B interface

The single specification that determines compatibility is the USB 3.0 Micro-B connection. It delivers fast data transfer rates when plugged into a USB 3.0 port and remains backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports. The drive requires the supplied AC adapter for power.

Plug-and-play add-on storage

The drive adds capacity without opening the computer case, freeing space on the internal drive to maintain system responsiveness. It needs an available USB port and a mains outlet for the adapter. It is not suited for buyers who need bus-powered portability or direct internal installation.

Questions about this item

How much usable space will I see from the 18 TB drive once it is formatted in Windows?

The drive ships formatted NTFS for Windows 10, 8.1 or 7, so the full 18 TB capacity is available immediately after plugging it in; actual usable space will be slightly lower due to file-system overhead.

What transfer speed can I expect from the USB 3.0 Micro-B interface on this model?

The USB 3.0 connection supports up to 5 Gbit/s signalling; real-world throughput depends on the mechanical drive and host controller but will not exceed the USB 3.0 limit.

What are the physical dimensions and weight of the 18 TB Elements desktop drive?

The unit measures 6.50" x 1.89" x 5.30" and weighs 1.98 lbs, so it fits on a desk and requires the included AC adapter for power.
