12 TB desktop backup drive

The Western Digital My Book 12TB USB 3.2 Gen 1 external hard drive delivers 12 TB of storage for local file backup. It targets home users and small offices that need a single high-capacity volume for photos, videos, music and documents. Built-in 256-bit AES hardware encryption protects data when the drive is locked. The drive is new and ships with an AC adapter and a SuperSpeed USB-A cable.

USB 3.2 Gen 1 throughput ceiling

The USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface caps transfer rates at 5 Gbps, so large backups and restores will run at mechanical hard-drive speeds rather than solid-state speeds. The supplied cable is rated for that link and no faster protocol is supported by the enclosure. Performance scales with the host controller and file mix, not with the drive firmware.

Desktop host requirements

Verify that the host computer provides a USB-A port and an available AC outlet for the included power adapter. The drive measures 6.72 x 1.92 x 5.48 inches and weighs 2.12 lbs, so allocate desk space accordingly. No internal installation or additional drivers are required beyond the bundled management software.

Questions about this item

Is the 12 TB capacity the only option for this My Book model?

The WDBBGB0120HBK-EESN is sold as a single 12 TB configuration; other capacities carry different model numbers.

What real-world throughput can I expect from the USB 3.2 Gen 1 connection?

The interface supports up to 5 Gbps, so sustained transfers typically reach the low hundreds of megabytes per second depending on the host controller and file sizes.

Does USB 3.2 Gen 1 limit the drive's maximum speed compared with faster USB standards?

Yes, the 5 Gbps ceiling of USB 3.2 Gen 1 caps peak transfer rates below what USB 3.2 Gen 2 or USB4 can deliver.
