Everyday storage and backup

The Western Digital My Passport Ultra provides 4TB of capacity in a portable hard drive designed for everyday computing and backup. It draws power directly from the host USB port so no external adapter is required. The blue enclosure weighs 8.1 ounces and measures 3.21 inches wide.

Simple USB connection and software setup

Plug the drive into a USB Type C port using the USB 3.1 Gen1 interface; it is backward compatible with USB 2.0 for older systems. Installation is typically driver-free on modern operating systems. The included WD Discovery and WD Backup software handle social media links and automatic backup scheduling. A common issue is forgetting to set a password before relying on the 256-bit AES hardware encryption.

Limits of the USB 3.1 Gen1 interface

The USB 3.1 Gen1 connection caps transfer rates at the interface maximum, so sustained throughput will not exceed that bandwidth. Mechanical hard drive latency and sequential speeds remain the practical bottleneck for large file moves. Users needing faster random access or higher sustained throughput would require a solid-state drive on a faster bus.
