2.5-inch SATA drive adapter

This adapter connects a standard 2.5-inch SATA hard drive or solid-state drive to a computer with a USB-A or USB-C port. It is intended for users who need to access data from a laptop drive, create disk images, back up files, or repurpose an old drive as external storage. The cable draws power from the USB connection and requires no separate power supply. It does not support 3.5-inch drives.

USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 transfer limits

When plugged into a USB 3.0 port the adapter reaches up to 5 Gbps, and up to 480 Mbps on a USB 2.0 port. The manufacturer states a potential 6 Gbps rate when both the host and the drive support UASP, which is 70 percent faster than conventional USB 3.0. The interface is backward compatible with USB 1.1. Actual throughput will depend on the host controller and the drive itself.

Capacity and drive compatibility

The adapter works with any 2.5-inch SATA or SATA II hard drive or SSD that uses the standard SATA connector. It handles drives such as the Samsung 840 EVO series and Crucial MX 100 series without issue. There is no capacity ceiling imposed by the adapter, but it cannot power or connect 3.5-inch desktop drives. Systems running Windows XP through 10, macOS, or Linux will recognise the drive immediately.

Questions about this item

Which version should I choose if I only have USB-A ports on my laptop?

The cable includes both USB-A 3.0 and USB-C connectors, so you can plug the USB-A end directly into your laptop without needing the USB-C adapter.

What does the 6 Gbps headline speed mean when I connect a SATA SSD?

The 6 Gbps rate is the USB 3.0 link ceiling with UASP enabled; actual throughput will be limited by the SATA drive itself, typically maxing out around the drive’s native SATA III limit.

Does the USB 3.0 interface cap transfer rates in practice?

Yes, the adapter negotiates USB 3.0 at up to 5 Gbps or USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps depending on the host port, and UASP support can push effective throughput higher on capable systems.
