Gas or electric, 24 or 30 inches: the range decision
A freestanding range combines an oven and a cooktop in one body, so the first choice is the fuel. Gas ranges need a gas supply line and an electrical outlet for the igniters, and many can be converted between natural gas and propane with a kit. Electric ranges need a dedicated 240 V circuit. Width is the second choice: a 24-inch range fits small kitchens and apartments, while a 30-inch range is the common full size with a larger oven.
Oven capacity is quoted in cubic feet; a figure around five cubic feet is a generous full-size oven. Burner count and layout matter on gas models: four burners are the usual layout, and a mix of high-output and simmer burners makes searing and sauces easier. Black, white and stainless finishes are common, and some ranges come with a matching range hood in a package, so check what is included.
Anti-tip brackets, gas fittings and getting it through the door
Install the anti-tip bracket that comes with a range; it stops the range tipping forward when a heavy door is loaded. Gas hookups need the right regulator and a flexible connector with a shutoff, and should be leak-tested by a qualified installer. Measure doorways and halls against the range depth and width, and check the clearance to side cabinets. Finally, read the titles carefully: this aisle also lists items that are not ranges, such as lamp fuel, so confirm you are viewing an oven or range.
Questions about Freestanding Ranges and Standalone Ovens
- Does a gas range need electricity?
- Yes, for most models. Electric igniters, oven controls, clocks and lights need power, so a gas range needs a standard outlet as well as a gas line. During an outage, top burners can usually be lit with a match, but the oven typically will not work.
- Can I convert a natural gas range to propane?
- Many gas ranges can, using a conversion kit that swaps orifices and adjusts the regulator, but not all. Check that the manual lists propane conversion for your exact model, and have a qualified installer do it and test for leaks.
- What does the oven capacity in cubic feet tell me?
- It is the usable interior volume. Compact 24-inch ranges are typically around 2.5 to 3 cubic feet, while full-size 30-inch ovens run roughly 4.5 to 6. A larger oven fits a big roasting pan or two racks, but check interior width, not only volume.
