Four ways to heat a pan, and the hookup each one expects
Gas burners need a gas line set up for natural gas or propane plus a small electrical connection for the igniter. Electric coil and infrared elements need only electricity, with portable one- and two-burner units running on a standard 120 V outlet and full-size built-ins needing 240 V. Induction heats the pan itself and works only with magnetic cookware. Match the heat source to what your kitchen already provides before comparing features, because changing a gas or 240 V hookup is a job for a licensed tradesperson.
Beware of listings that only borrow the word oven. Some items in this aisle are electronic modules and circuit boards whose titles mention an oven, not cooking appliances. A real oven lists a cabinet width or capacity, a voltage and a power source; pin counts, DC voltage ranges or module numbers mark a component instead. For a cabinet-mounted oven, start with wall ovens.
Hoods and microwaves: where the smoke and steam go
A range hood removes grease, heat and moisture, and it should be at least as wide as the cooktop below it. Ducted hoods vent outdoors and clear the air best; recirculating hoods pass air through a charcoal filter and back into the room, which is easier to install but less effective. Airflow is rated in CFM, so higher figures suit gas burners and heavy frying. Over-the-range microwaves combine a vent fan with the oven and need the right mounting height; compare kitchen exhaust hoods if you want a separate vent.
Questions about Ovens, Cooktops, Range Hoods and Microwaves
- Do I need a vent hood over a cooktop?
- Cooking releases grease and steam, and gas burners add combustion by-products, so some ventilation helps in any kitchen. A hood either ducts that air outdoors or filters it and recirculates it; ducting is more effective. Check local building rules for gas appliances.
- How can I tell a real oven from a component listing?
- A real oven gives a width, capacity in cubic feet, voltage and power source. A component gives DC voltage ranges, pin counts, channels or module names. Also check size: a wall oven is around two and a half feet wide, not a few centimeters.
- What does CFM mean on a range hood?
- CFM is cubic feet of air moved per minute. A higher figure clears smoke and steam faster, which matters for gas burners and frequent frying, but it also means more noise. Choose a hood at least as wide as the cooktop.
